According to the most recent census, there are nearly 600,000 self-identified* Metis people in Canada.
Provincial
There are approximately 66,500 self-identified* Metis in BC. There are larger numbers of Metis people in the prairie provinces.
Vancouver Island
There are around 8,000 self-identified* Metis living on Vancouver Island.
*The definition of "Metis" used by Census Canada was not limited to "Red River" or "Michif" Metis, but included everyone who was of Aboriginal ancestry and who self-identified as "Metis".
